Summary
One-third of older Americans die with dementia, a condition that causes a decline in mental ability that interferes with daily activities. Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause, responsible for 60–80% of cases. Quality of life for those with dementia and their caregivers depends on support in three areas: home and family, health systems, and long-term care. Providing care for someone with dementia is emotionally, physically, and financially challenging. Health systems and professionals face difficulties in caring for those with dementia. Foundations, governments, and other funders support research and services related to dementia, but more is needed to improve healthcare and support.
